Maizinol, a proprietary extract sourced from non-GMO corn leaves, is a non-melatonin and non-habit-forming sleep and stress supplement that supports better quality sleep and a healthy mood balance. Maizinol mimics melatonin and helps reduce cortisol levels, a key biomarker of stress. Stress and sleep disruptions raise cortisol levels, which further disrupt sleep (Talbott et al., 2023). Reducing cortisol not only decreases stress through regulation of the HPA axis but also increases slow-wave sleep. Maizinol is standardized to 0.2% 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA), a compound with an affinity for melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2. It stimulates the melatonin and serotonin systems and supports both sleep- and mood-related hormones (Talbott et al., 2023).
Human clinical studies support Maizinol’s use for both stress and sleep. Maizinol works with the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle as melatonin does, by increasing time spent in slow-wave deep sleep, but without the risk of daytime sleepiness (Talbott et al., 2023; Yimam et al., 2018). In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, participants experienced improvements in sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a fitness tracker, as well as significant increases in deep sleep duration and total sleep time (Talbott et al., 2023). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with stressed individuals showed improvements in time to fall asleep and sleep quality, less frequent waking, and increased time spent in REM sleep (Talbott and Talbott 2013). Other studies with 6-MBOA showed increased time spent in deep sleep and improvements in standardized mood assessment scores (Talbott et al., 2023; Kalman et al., 2015).
Maizinol has been shown to be as clinically effective as melatonin. Best taken 60 minutes before bed, Maizinol is a non-melatonin, non-habit-forming, plant-based approach to a restful night’s sleep.
